About Richard Karmel

Partner, Mazars UK – Global head of Business and Human Rights

Richard Karmel is responsible for the Mazars’ award winning business and human rights reporting line.

He has operated as a Partner since 1998 and is a specialist in cross-border transactions and has provided invaluable advice for both overseas companies investing in the UK and companies investing in Europe.

Background

Richard qualified in 1992 as a Chartered Accountant with a large firm of accountants, where he was seconded to the Paris office for two years. As a result, he became conversant with French accountancy, tax and company law practices, which gave him a valuable European perspective.

Richard has particular expertise of companies in the mining and oil and gas sectors and has clients with operations throughout Africa, Asia and America.

Head of Mazars’ Business and Human Rights Team

Richard and his team have devised an innovative service to help companies and banks manage the risks to their reputations, whilst ensuring compliance with their social and environmental obligations.

One of Richard’s current roles is as a lead member of the project team of the Reporting and Assurance Frameworks Initiative. This Initiative launched the UN Guiding Principles Reporting Framework in February 2015. This is a guide for companies about what good reporting on their human rights performance looks like. In 2016, it is hoping to launch the Assurance Framework which will be a guide for assurance professionals who assure these reports about how best to do that assurance.

In 2014, this Initiative was officially supported by the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights.
